I just spent the past hour and a half writing an email to a student explaining why "Invasion of Islam" is probably not a good term to use when talking about the conquest of Spain/al-Andalus, and how Islam has both benefits and drawbacks for women in the middle ages... without being able to point to Christian texts from the same period to show that European women didn't have it so good either. This is a hard assignment for ninth graders! Hopefully my numerous Qur'anic references will not be taken badly by the teacher. I mean... it's not the source they were given, but the source they have doesn't mention free women at all!
I'd have chosen different sources. The end.
