I saw something on the way to work that made me stop and think. At one of the churches here, the local poor and homeless line up for charity food on Saturday mornings. I often pass the group of them sitting on the church stairs, waiting. Today, however, there was a church event going on. All the nicely dressed church members, white and black alike, skirted their children around the homeless, who had been relegated to a back door, so as not to block the main entrance from the churchgoers.

What kind of a places is this, where those most in need of the chuch's attention are sent to the back door?
