RIP Dorothy

My grandmother died Wednesday night. I have no grandmothers left. That's hard to think about.

On Wednesday morning, she met her first great-granddaughter, the child of my cousin. She was 92 years old, and died peacefully with most of my family there. Although a passing is always sad, that's the way I want to go.

Rest well, gramma.

Work work work. (Or, where to find it?)

The first post in a long time... I suppose I don't have much to do these days, being unemployed, so I'll start up this again, this time as a whining/knitting blog. Might as well, eh?

I need a job. I need one badly. At least something to get me out of the house a few days of the week. Sitting, watching tv, and knitting can only take someone so far before they get horrifically bored. The only problem? There's very little to do with an MA in Middle Eastern Studies in Durham, NC. If anyone has any brilliant ideas, or knows someone who knows someone... I'm now that desperate. Time to go visit the local bookstores and beg for work.

A good side effect of the no working is all the knitting I've been doing. Since moving down to NC, I've made myself a new sweater, Scott got new socks, I donated a purse to a charity auction, and I'm making 4 more to try to sell at a craft fair. I'm also making a baby sweater for Kei, my cousin's new baby. I have a one pound bag of purple, grey, and white 100% cotton that will soon become a (or several) new market bags because the Harris Teeter ones just aren't pretty to look at like the ones from whole foods, but I feel weird toting around bags for rival grocery stores. Besides, everyone can use more lovely tote bags.

Also, my house seems to have become infested with flies. I'm not unclean. We take the trash out daily, we don't leave food out. SIGH. Any thoughts on getting rid of common houseflies? It's getting annoying, and poor half-blind Kit can only kill so many. Layla just plays with them until they get away again.

Knitting project: Scotts socks

So, today I finished the first of scott's socks, a pair of (Duke) blue, simple ones. Here's an in-progress look:

never thought I'd say it, but i miss DC. i miss having friends, and there's nowhere for me to find any, here. it gets pretty old sitting at home and staring at the walls for most of the day until scott gets home, and then we watch tv and go to bed. guess i'm starting to understand why so many 50's housewives were heavily medicated. and, thanks to the economy, it doesn't look like there's a whole lot of work for me. do I give in and go work for scott's parents? I don't know. all i know is that i'm going nuts here, bored out of my mind and lonely.

What sucks a ton?

Kidney stones.

What sucks more than kidney stones?

Having a kidney stone two days after moving to a new city, before even moving into your new home and saying with your inlaws, being thousands of miles from your mother.

OUCH.

Countdown

The wedding is October 27, so the countdown has begun. Hard to believe that it was only three years and a few weeks ago that I met this wonderful man. It's been a long time coming, but yet I still learn something new from him every day.

An update.

Been a while since I posted, as [livejournal.com profile] parisienne reminded me, so I'll just give a brief update...

30 Days until the wedding. What does this mean? CRAZY. Luckily it's very very small, so it shouldn't end up too much of a thing.

... ew, wet cat just walked on me. ew ew ew. she will not stop :(

So the feral kitten we adopted a few months ago has turned out to be THE loviest cat I've ever seen. When I sit down she HAS to be on me. This wasn't a prblem when she was 3lbs and 4 months. But see, now she is 6 months. And more lbs, and bigger. Makes typing hard.

Anyway, job's fine... the 1 bedroom apartment is getting a little small, so i'm hoping we'll move up soon. Family is good as well. Boring as far as updates go, but that's the state of the union.

Oooh. Meme.

From [livejournal.com profile] sasha_davidovna

List seven songs you are into right now. no matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your summer. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they're listening to.

A fun way to waste part of a Sunday afternoon...
(I'm linking to music videos on youtube if they exist)

1. I've Just Seen a Face - The Beatles
Oh my goodness am I looking forward to this movie! This song has been going through my head pretty much since seeing OotP. Love it. This is a great remake of the original, I think!

2.  Beyond the Sea - Bobby Darin
This link is Kevin Spacey from the movie, though... love the yellow pants. I think we're playing this at the wedding.

3.  U and Ur Hand - P!nk
I just keep singing along with this in the car. It gets in your head like crazy...

4.  Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Green Day
Their new album has reminded me why I loved Green Day so much back in the day.

5.  Don't Download This Song - Weird Al
Oh, does it make me laugh...

6.  Heaven On Their Minds - Jesus Christ Superstar
One of my favorite musical songs. I've been listening to it a TON this summer.

7.  All Along the Watchtower
This clip is the version in the season finale of battlestar galactica. I'm counting down the days until it starts again. WHAT a good song...

Life

My parents had to put my kitty to sleep yesterday. I grew up with her. We got Molly when I was in 3rd grade, my sister was so little she doesn't even remember it. She was an amazing jumper. Floor to fridge was no problem for her, even though the past five years or so, she hasn't been able to make those leaps anymore. Sometimes she wasn't the snuggliest of kitties, but she always seemed to know when she should let someone pet her for a while. She comforted me when our family friend died, when Harriet died, when my first relationship ended, when I missed college and all my friends, and every little sadness in between. She saw an awful lot of my life, and going home won't quite be home anymore without her. I miss her already.

An Update

So, I'm taking the car to the garage tomorrow to get it looked at. I'm hoping things won't be waaaay too expensive, as the boy's car is out too. (worst week EVAR)

I'm debating the future use of this space. I'm not writing fanfic anymore, i don't want to post original bits on the unlikely offchance I'd ever try to publish, and job updates are right out.

Now that my computer is back from repairs, maybe I'll try some more iconing?

Week 1, Day 2, Words: 3,067

It might be harder to start with something halfway done, i'm finding. There are fewer extra words from descriptions, as my characters have already been described. Last year it took me a full week and a half to make it to any plot at all. Now, plot is all I have to work with. Curiouser and curiouser.

As the year turns...

So, the time comes once again:

National Novel Writing Month

As last year, this journal will become a place to rant about falling short or exceeding the word count. Beware.

Grrr, BSG.

So it's been a zillion years since I posted. Yes, I know. Bad me.

Anyway, just wanted to voice my displeasure with this season of Battlestar Galactica. Or, shall it be known as Battlestar Iraq? I'm getting damned sick of getting it pounded into my head - yes! I get it already! The Galactica crew are now an allegory for the oppressed Sunni insurgents in Iraq, and WE are the Cylons!

I see enough of suicide bombers on the news. I don't want to see it in my tv, and I don't want it to be my heroes doing the bombing. It's too painful to watch, anymore.
